Room: Open source

Readymade (npm install)

A tiny library for background jobs, published on a Sunday and still in use by teams the artist has never met. The peanuts are a comment on dependencies.

An open cardboard box overflowing with white packing peanuts on a white plinth, a gallery attendant carefully sweeping the spilled peanuts back.

Curator's note

Every project needed a few background jobs (send this email later, retry that payment) and every queue on offer came with its own server. The artist made a small one that keeps jobs in the Postgres you already have, and put it in the public domain of npm.

Wall text

A job is a row. Workers claim rows with FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, so two never take the same job, and an unfinished job goes back in the queue. There is no broker and no dashboard to keep alive.

Small, and staying small

The library has one rule: it must fit in 4 kB with no dependencies. Every feature request is weighed against it, which has produced better features and many polite refusals.

Installation views

  • Close-up of white packing peanuts spilling from a cardboard box on a white plinth, one balanced on the edge.
The work has no dependencies. The installation has several thousand.
