The Leo Marek Collection

Websites that belong in a museum. Fortunately, they work.

I'm Leo, an independent web developer in Prague. I build fast, accessible websites and web apps for small companies, and I take the work more seriously than myself.

Now showing

Selected works

Websites and web apps from the permanent collection, each one still in use, none of them behind glass in real life.

The whole collection
  • A large canvas of a minimalist shop page with coffee beans and a coral button on a gallery wall, a bag of coffee on a plinth in front of it and a woman photographing the canvas.

A small Prague coffee roaster sold beans by phone and at a market stall. Now they sell them while they sleep, on a site that weighs less than one of their old photos.

  • An enormous painting of four bright green circles on a white gallery wall, an older critic in a tweed jacket stroking his chin in front of it.

2025React, Vite and a performance budget enforced in CICourtesy of Denní Kurýr

A daily news site that took six seconds to show a headline on a phone. Two weeks later the scores were four green circles, and the newsroom framed them.

  • A black server rack displayed alone in the middle of an empty white gallery behind a low rope, two visitors whispering at a respectful distance.

A courier company planned its routes on a spreadsheet that took a minute to open. The new app plans them before the coffee is ready.

Leo, a man with short dark hair, a beard and glasses, sits perfectly still on top of a tall white plinth with a laptop on his knees while two visitors study him closely.

The artist

Leo Marek, b. 1987

Leo has been building for the web since 2010: first at a Prague agency, then a product team, and for the last six years on his own. His practice explores the tension between deadlines and doing things properly, usually resolved in favour of doing things properly, slightly before the deadline. He works in Astro, TypeScript and Postgres, and occasionally in WordPress, for old times' sake.

Chronology

A retrospective

Every place the work has hung, in order. Most of them are still standing.

  1. 2003

    A bedroom in Brno

    First website

A fan site for a band that split up before it launched. Tables, a visitor counter and a GIF of fire.

  2. 2010–2014

    Studio Lamela, Prague

    Junior developer, then lead

Agency years: forty-odd sites for hotels, a brewery and one ministry, most of them launched on a Friday.

  3. 2014–2020

    Tarif, Prague

    Front-end lead, product team

An energy price comparison used by a million households a year. Learned to measure before touching anything.

  4. 2020–now

    Independent, Prague

Invitations to the private view

One email when a new work goes on display. Four or five a year, no wine, no small talk.

Closing time in an empty white gallery: Leo switches off the lights by the door with his laptop under his arm while a guard sleeps on a chair.

The museum is closing. Your project doesn't have to.

Tell me what you'd like built and when it should open. I reply to every enquiry within two working days.

Welcome to the collection. Ask me about the works, what a commission costs, or when Leo is free.
